There are many different types of upholstery fabrics and different ways to care for them. Here at Tacoma Cleanpro in Tacoma, Washington, we know how to gently and efficiently clean your upholstery. We would like to share some useful tips on how to care for different types of upholstery

Microfibers

The most recent type of upholstery addition to home furnishings on the market. They are soft to the touch and come in many different colors, they also resist most stains and can easily be cleaned with soap and water. This fabric is a good choice for households with children and pets.

Cotton

This can be a sturdy, family-friendly product. At the time of manufacture, a stain-resistant finish is normally applied to the fabric. The durability of cotton upholstery depends on the weave and finish. If a cotton fabric has been pre-washed (as is often in the case of slipcovers,) then it should be ok to clean with soap and water. However, it is always a good idea to check the manufacturer's recommended cleaning methods. Do not put cotton upholstered furniture in direct sunlight as they tend to fade.

Canvas

This type of upholstery is is especially durable and is a good choice for family rooms. The flat surface tends to show grime and hold dirt particles, so frequent vacuuming is a must. Pre-washing before fabrication to allow for shrinkage, makes it easy to put canvas slipcovers into the washing machine for cleaning.

Silk & Linen

These delicate but beautiful types of upholsteries are best suited for formal dining or living rooms where children and pets are scarce. Have stained pieces professionally cleaned. Keep silks and linen out of direct exposure to sunlight whenever possible.

Weaves

Damask weaves, like silk and linens, are a formal type of upholstery. They should be brushed and gently vacuumed to avoid breaking threads. Spills should be immediately sponged up.

Leather

This type of furniture is supple yet durable and should be gently vacuumed and damp wiped as needed. Clean with saddle soap or leather conditioner, buffing thoroughly to remove residue.

Suede

This upholstery looks beautiful but should not be in a household with animals that shed. It acts like velcro to pet hair and can be extremely hard to clean! It should be vacuumed with the soft brush attachment. Use only cleaners made specifically for suede. Remove small spots with art gum erasers. Never clean with water.
