Your furniture is one of the most obvious features of your home’s decor, and as such it says a lot about you. Make sure yours is giving the right impression, and make sure it has a long life, by taking good care of it! Cleanpro in Tacoma would like to help by offering a few tips for taking care of any cotton upholstery you happen to have.

Check your fabrics

First things first, it’s important that you check the manufacturers’ labels on your fabrics to learn what types of fabrics your furniture is upholstered with, as different fabrics require different treatment. Cotton is very common, so it’s likely that at least some of your furniture will be cotton-upholstered, but it’s important to know if has been pre-washed or not; if it has it is most likely fine to clean your fabric using a soap and water solution. If the label states it is OK then consider applying stain-resistant finishes to your upholstery, especially if you have children or pets, to extend its lifespan.

Vacuuming

Your vacuum doesn’t only clean floors! Most models come with an upholstery attachment, so make use of this if yours does (and make sure to clean the attachment periodically). Regular vacuuming will prevent the build up of tiny particles of dust and dirt that can act like sandpaper on your fabric, not to mention looking and smelling unpleasant.

Remove pet hair

Pet hair is unsurprisingly dirty and smelly, so it isn’t a great addition to your furniture. To get rid of pet hair, simply use a clothes brush with soft bristles on your upholstery, and then go over with a lint roller to remove any strays.

Stain removal

Make sure you’re aware of the manufacturers’ directions before you apply any products to your fabrics. Should you spill anything on your cotton upholstery, it can be cleaned by gently blotting with a clean towel (don’t use a colored towel as the dye could transfer) and then being washed gently with soap and water, or a specialized upholstery cleaner if you wish. Remember to always test your cleaning method on a small, inconspicuous patch of fabric to make sure it won’t cause any damage.
